Questions

The things people ask us most.

Can’t find your answer? Call either hospital. Someone will pick up.

Coming in

Do I need an appointment?

Never. We’re an emergency hospital, so you can walk in any time we’re open. Joining the waiting room from your phone on the way helps us get ready for you.

What are your hours?

Fullerton is open 24 hours, every day of the year. Garden Grove is open weeknights from 6pm to 7am, and 24 hours on Saturdays, Sundays and major holidays.

How do I know if it’s really an emergency?

If you’re asking, call us. A real person on our team will tell you whether to come in now or wait for your family vet. You can also read our guide to the signs that can’t wait.

Do you have to call in a doctor?

No. Our veterinarians are on site the whole time we’re open, ready for emergencies.

What if I need help getting my pet here?

Animal Ambulance of Southern California can transport your pet, with oxygen if needed. Call them at 866-473-8911.

While you’re here

How soon will my pet be seen?

Right away. A technician takes your pet back to check vital signs and look for anything life threatening. Like a human ER, the doctor then sees the most critical patients first.

What happens if my pet needs to stay?

You’ll get a treatment plan with a cost range, since care can change overnight. Each incoming doctor examines every hospitalized patient and updates the plan, and we keep you posted.

What if my pet needs surgery?

We have a full surgical suite and perform emergency surgery on site. The doctor will explain the surgery, the risks and the cost before you decide.

Do you treat birds, reptiles, rabbits and small mammals?

Sometimes. It depends on which doctor is working. Please call ahead so we can tell you whether tonight’s doctor has the right experience.

Do you offer vaccines, spays, neuters or boarding?

No. We only practice emergency and critical care. Your family vet is the right place for wellness care and elective surgery.

Cost and payment

How much does an emergency visit cost?

The emergency exam is $125. After the exam, you’ll get a written treatment plan with the cost of every test and treatment, before anything starts. More on cost.

What does the exam fee include?

Vital signs from a technician, a complete physical exam from the doctor, and time to talk about your concerns and your pet’s condition.

Does it cost more than waiting for my family vet?

Not for the same work. An emergency visit feels pricier because a sick pet often needs several things at once. We show you each one first.

When do I pay?

Payment is due when you agree to the treatment plan.

What if I’m not sure I can afford it?

Tell us. We’ll start with what’s most urgent and plan the rest with you. We accept CareCredit, Scratchpay and Cherry for payment plans.

You and your family vet

Is it disloyal to my family vet to come here?

Not at all. Local family vets founded this hospital, and many send their own patients here at night. We send everything to your vet so they can pick up where we left off.

Can I see my pet’s records and X‑rays?
What if I think my pet ate something toxic?

Come in right away, even if your pet seems fine. Bring the product or its packaging, and anything your pet vomited or chewed.

I found an injured animal. What should I do?

Contact animal control in the county where you found the animal. If it’s an emergency right now, call us and we’ll help you decide what to do.

We hope you don’t need us. We’re here if you do.

Fullerton is open 24 hours, every day. Garden Grove covers weeknights, weekends and holidays. No appointment, ever.
